DIN Norm Flange Dimensions Table (PN 6 – PN 150)

Read this DIN Norm flange dimensions table before ordering: a valve only bolts onto the line if its flange matches the counter-flange already fitted, and the bolt circle and hole count differ between pressure ratings at the same nominal size.

Connection dimensions of DIN Norm flanges from PN 6 to PN 150 for nominal sizes DN 10 to DN 250. Use them to check that a valve flange matches the counter-flange on the line before ordering. All dimensions in millimetres. What the Columns Mean

Five figures decide whether two flanges can be bolted together, and the DIN Norm flange dimensions table gives all of them: the outside diameter of the flange, its thickness, the bolt circle diameter, the diameter of the bolt holes and the number of holes. Everything else about a flange — the neck, the bore, the facing — can differ without preventing assembly, and none of it appears in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

Of the five, the bolt circle is the one that decides the job. Two flanges with the same outside diameter but different bolt circles will not mate, which is why the DIN Norm flange dimensions table should be read across the row rather than glanced at for the outside diameter alone.

Same Nominal Size, Different Rating

A nominal diameter is not a flange specification. DN 100 appears in every pressure rating from PN 6 upwards, and the DIN Norm flange dimensions table gives a different set of figures for each one. As the rating rises the flange grows thicker, the bolt circle moves outwards and the bolts get larger or more numerous, and each step is a separate row of the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

This is the most common ordering error: a valve is specified as DN 100 without a PN, arrives with the wrong flange, and cannot be fitted. Quote the nominal diameter and the pressure rating together, both taken from the same row of the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

Where PN 10 and PN 16 Are Identical

There is one convenient overlap worth knowing. Up to DN 150, PN 10 and PN 16 flanges share the same connecting dimensions, so a PN 10 counter-flange accepts a PN 16 flange and the other way round. The DIN Norm flange dimensions table shows the two ratings running with identical figures over that range.

They separate at DN 200. There the outside diameter and bolt circle still agree, but PN 10 carries eight bolts and PN 16 carries twelve, so the hole positions no longer coincide. Anyone who has learned the overlap at small sizes and assumes it continues will meet that difference on site, which is why the DIN Norm flange dimensions table is checked rather than remembered.

Bolt Holes Straddle the Centreline

By convention the holes are positioned so that they straddle the principal centrelines rather than sitting on them. A flange with an even number of holes therefore has no hole at top dead centre, which keeps the vertical and horizontal axes clear for level gauges, drains and supports. The hole count in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table is what tells you whether that is the case.

It also means a flange can only be rotated in steps. With eight holes the increment is 45 degrees, so a valve with an offset actuator or a lever that has to clear a wall must be planned around those steps. The hole count in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table is what sets the increment.

Facings and Gaskets

The DIN Norm flange dimensions table gives connecting dimensions; the facing is specified separately. Form B1 with a 2 mm raised face is the usual choice for the steel flanges listed in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table, while flat-faced flanges are used with cast iron bodies, where a raised face would put a bending load on a brittle material.

Gasket selection follows from the facing. A raised face takes a gasket that sits inside the bolt circle, and a flat face normally takes a full-face gasket drilled for the bolts. Take the gasket outside diameter from the facing dimensions rather than from the flange outside diameter listed in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

The Table Applies to Every Flange Type

Weld neck, slip-on, blind, threaded and loose flanges with collars all share the same connecting dimensions at a given DN and PN. The DIN Norm flange dimensions table therefore serves all of them, and the type affects the pipe-side connection and the strength of the joint rather than the bolt pattern.

That is useful when a valve has to meet an existing line: the counter-flange can be any type, as long as its row in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table matches. A blind flange for a pressure test is chosen the same way.

Bolting and Tightening

The hole diameter in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table is not the bolt diameter. A hole of 18 mm is drilled for an M16 bolt, and the clearance is deliberate. Order bolts by their thread size, not by the hole diameter given in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

Bolt length is set by two flange thicknesses, the gasket, washers and the nut, so the thickness column matters as much as the hole pattern. Tighten in a star sequence in at least three passes: a joint pulled up on one side first will leak, however correct the parts taken from the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

Measuring a Flange That Is Already Installed

Bolt circle diameter is rarely easy to measure directly because the centre is occupied by the pipe. With an even number of holes, measure centre to centre across two opposite holes. With an odd number, measure from the centre of one hole to the middle of the gap opposite and take twice that distance before matching it against the DIN Norm flange dimensions table.

Then count the holes, measure one hole and the flange outside diameter, and find the row of the DIN Norm flange dimensions table that matches all three. Identifying an unmarked flange from a single dimension is guesswork; three dimensions together are conclusive.

Cast Iron and Steel Are Not Interchangeable

The dimensions in the DIN Norm flange dimensions table are shared by cast iron and steel flanges at the same rating, but the pressure-temperature behaviour behind them is not. Cast iron loses capacity quickly with temperature and tolerates no bending, whatever the DIN Norm flange dimensions table says about the fit, so a steel flange bolted tightly against a cast iron one can crack it.

Where the two meet, use a full-face gasket, tighten to the lower of the two torque figures and support the pipework so that no weight hangs on the joint. The DIN Norm flange dimensions table confirms the parts fit; the materials still have to be checked separately.

Related Tables

The DIN Norm flange dimensions table covers one half of a mixed-standard job. The ASME B16.5 flange dimensions give the same five figures for the inch series, the ANSI Class to DIN PN conversion matches the ratings, and the inch to mm metric conversion table puts both dimension sets in the same unit. Together they answer whether a valve fits, not only whether it is strong enough.
