Valve Body Materials: Cast Iron, Sphero, Steel, Stainless Steel

Batu Valve manufactures valve bodies in carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, sphero (ductile iron) and brass. The body material is determined by the medium, the pressure and the temperature; the same valve type can be produced in different body materials.

Principal materials

Carbon steel: ASTM A105 · A216 WCB

Stainless steel: 1.4301 (AISI 304) · 1.4401 (AISI 316)

Cast iron: GG-25 (cast iron) · GGG 40.3 (sphero)

Brass: MS 58

Seat: PTFE · RPTFE · PEEK · Devlon

O-ring: Viton

Natural gas and Burak type mono-block ball valves are also manufactured with a stainless steel (1.4301 – 1.4401) body.

Ball, stem and coatings

  • Ball: ENP coating on A105, or stainless steel (1.4301).
  • Stem: stainless steel (SS 420 / 1.4021, 1.4301); 17-4 PH.
  • ENP: electroless nickel plating; used on the ball.
  • TCC: tungsten carbide coating; used on the ball and seat surfaces for metal-to-metal sealing.

The compatibility of medium and material is given in the chemical compatibility chart. The chart evaluates four body materials (brass, cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel AISI 316) and four seal materials (rigid PVC, neoprene, Viton, PTFE) for approximately 300 media. The values apply at ambient temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Both are cast irons. Batu Valve manufactures cast iron (GG-25) ball valves in PN 6, PN 10 and PN 16, and sphero (GGG 40.3) ball valves in the PN 25 pressure rating.

Yes. Natural gas and Burak type mono-block ball valves are manufactured with a stainless steel (1.4301 – 1.4401) body; the ball and stem are also stainless steel.

A stainless steel body and trim are selected. The compatibility of the medium with the material is checked against the chemical compatibility chart.
