Ball Valve Design and Operation
Batu Valve ball valves convey, divert or stop the medium by the rotation of a ball inside the body; the ball is rotated to open or shut off the flow, providing quick shut-off.
The production range covers split body, fully welded and mono-block designs, floating and trunnion mounted balls, and full bore and reduction bore valves. Connection, operation and safety options are given below.

Operating principle
The rotation of the lever or gearbox is transmitted to the ball through the stem. The ball, which has a bore through its centre, is rotated to open or shut off the flow. On lever operated valves the lever lies in the direction of flow when the valve is open.
Fully open or fully closed: a ball valve is left only in these two positions. In a valve left partly open, the ball damages the PTFE seats and the valve begins to leak.
Main components
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Body | The main pressure-containing part. |
| Closure | Closes the body and carries the line connection. |
| Ball | The element that opens and shuts off the flow. |
| Stem | Transmits the rotation of the lever or gearbox to the ball. |
| Seat | The sealing ring that bears against the ball. |
| Ball seat insert (PTFE) | The soft element between the ball and the seat (PTFE). |
| O-ring | Sealing around the body, closure, stem and seat. |
| Lever · gearbox | Manual operation; lever on small sizes, handwheel gearbox on large sizes. |

Sealing
At high pressure the medium acts behind the seat ring, pushes the ring against the ball and provides the seal itself. When the pressure drops this force decreases; the spring supporting the ring then takes over and contact is maintained. In a ball valve the difficult condition is not high pressure but sealing at low pressure.
| Seat design | How it works |
|---|---|
| Soft seat | A resilient PTFE element is located between the seat and the ball. |
| Primary soft, secondary metal | The PTFE seals first; if the PTFE is damaged, the metal seat bears on the ball. This is the basis of the fire-safe design. |
| Metal-to-metal | Selected where the line carries abrasive matter or the temperature does not permit PTFE. The contact surfaces of the ball and seat are hardened. |
Seat materials: PTFE (standard), glass fibre reinforced PTFE (RPTFE), graphite-filled PTFE, PEEK and Devlon. PEEK and Devlon are used in the high pressure classes.
Ball valve types
| Design | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Split body | The body and closures are bolted together; the valve can be dismantled for maintenance. |
| Fully welded | The body is closed by welding. It is light, durable and compact; it is used below and above ground on transmission and distribution lines. |
| Mono-block (Burak type) | One-piece body, installed between two flanges. It is straightforward to install, has a low pressure drop, and is light and compact. |
Floating Ball and Trunnion Mounted Ball
Floating ball valves have a ball that is not fixed to the stem; it “floats” freely inside the valve body. When line pressure is applied, the ball is pushed towards the downstream sealing surface and forms a secure seal. Trunnion mounted ball valves carry the ball on the stem at the top and on a lower bearing (trunnion) at the bottom; the operating torque is low.
In Batu Valve catalogs the floating and trunnion dimensions are given together for the same pressure class.
Full Bore and Reduction Bore
Full bore valves have a ball bore equal to the inside diameter of the pipe; the flow passes without restriction. Reduction bore valves have a ball bore one size smaller than the pipe diameter.
Connection types
| Connection | Description |
|---|---|
| Flanged | The valve is connected to the pipe by flanges. The flange face may be raised face (RF) or ring type joint (RTJ); RTJ is used in the high pressure classes. |
| Butt welded (BW) | The valve end is joined to the pipe by butt welding. |
| Socket weld (SW) | The pipe enters the socket at the valve end and is welded. |
| Threaded | The valve is connected to the pipe by thread. The thread length on the pipe must not be shorter than the thread length of the valve. |
| Wafer | The valve has no flanges of its own; it is clamped between two pipe flanges. |
| Union end | Connected by a detachable union. |
Operation
- Manual: lever, T-handle or gearbox operated.
- Actuated: pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuator.
In the API 6D series, valves of 4" and below are fitted with a lever and larger valves with a handwheel gearbox. The actuator mounting flange on top of the body is to ISO 5211 dimensions; an actuator can also be fitted at a later date.
Safety features
Fire-safe design. Soft seat material is damaged in a fire. In the fire-safe design, when the PTFE and O-rings burn away, a metal-to-metal seal forms between the secondary metal seat and the ball; the graphite gaskets between the body and closure withstand high temperature. It is required on lines carrying flammable media such as oil and LPG.
Anti-blowout stem design. The stem is designed with a wide lower shoulder; even if the stem retainers and seals are removed, pressure cannot eject the stem.
Antistatic design. On lines carrying flammable media, static charge must not build up on the ball. The spring and ball in the stem conduct any charge through the body to the pipeline.
Drain and vent. When the valve is closed, pressurised medium remains in the body cavity. The drain at the bottom and the vent at the top are provided for releasing it safely; they are specified in the order.

Frequently asked questions
No. A ball valve is left only fully open or fully closed. In a partly open position the ball damages the PTFE seats and the valve begins to leak.
In a full bore valve the ball bore equals the inside diameter of the pipe and the flow passes without restriction. In a reduction bore valve the ball bore is one size smaller than the pipe diameter.
In a floating valve the ball is not fixed to the stem; it “floats” freely inside the valve body. When line pressure is applied, the ball is pushed towards the downstream sealing surface and forms a secure seal. In a trunnion valve the ball is carried by the stem at the top and a lower bearing at the bottom; the operating torque is low in this design.
Both are pressure ratings: PN is the European (EN) designation and Class the American (ASME) designation. Class 150 corresponds to PN 20 and Class 300 to PN 50. For a carbon steel API 6D valve, the working pressure for Class 150 is 19.6 bar between −29 °C and +38 °C; the permissible pressure decreases as temperature rises.
The lever lies in the direction of flow when the valve is open. The stop pin limits the travel of the lever; no further force is applied once the lever rests against the pin.
