PN and Class Pressure Ratings
The pressure rating of Batu Valve products is given in two systems: PN in European standards and Class in American standards.
Pressure ratings
PN: European (DIN / EN); nominal pressure in bar
Class: American (ANSI / ASME)
Class 150: PN 20
Class 300: PN 50
Class 600: PN 100
1 bar: 14.5 psi
PN rating
PN is the European (DIN / EN) pressure rating; it indicates the nominal pressure in bar. Ratings: PN 1 · 1.6 · 2.5 · 4 · 6 · 10 · 16 · 25 · 40 · 64 · 100 · 160 · 250 · 320 · 400.
Class rating
Class is the American (ANSI / ASME) pressure rating. Ratings: Class 150 · 300 · 400 · 600 · 900 · 1500 · 2500.
Class – PN conversion
| Class | PN (bar) |
|---|---|
| 150 | 20 |
| 300 | 50 |
| 400 | 64 |
| 600 | 100 |
| 900 | 150 |
| 1500 | 250 |
| 2500 | 420 |
Working and test pressures
The values below apply to carbon steel body API 6D valves.
| Class | Working pressure (−29 … +38 °C) | Working pressure (100 °C) | Shell test | Seat test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 | 19.6 bar | 17.7 bar | 29.4 bar | 21.6 bar |
| 300 | 51.1 bar | 46.6 bar | 76.7 bar | 56.2 bar |
| 600 | 102.1 bar | 93.2 bar | 153.2 bar | 112.3 bar |
| 900 | 153.2 bar | 139.8 bar | 229.8 bar | 168.5 bar |
| 1500 | 255.3 bar | 233.0 bar | 383.0 bar | 280.8 bar |
| 2500 | 425.5 bar | 388.3 bar | 638.3 bar | 468.1 bar |
- The shell test is 1.5 times and the seat test 1.1 times the working pressure.
- The permissible working pressure decreases as temperature rises.
- Values vary with the material grade.
Pressure on the valve nameplate
The nameplate on the valve states the pressure rating together with pressure and temperature values; for example, on a Class 300 valve, 52 bar at −29 °C and 47 bar at +100 °C. The operating limit is the maximum working pressure stated in bar on the valve.
After installation, the line is tested at 1.5 times the nominal pressure on the nameplate and checked for leakage.
MOP
For natural gas valves, MOP denotes the "maximum operating pressure". Batu Valve natural gas valves are rated MOP 5 – 20.
Pressure units
| Unit | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 bar | 14.5 psi · 0.981 kg/cm² · 100 kPa |
| 1 kg/cm² | 14.22 psi |
| 1 psi | 0.0689 bar |
Frequently asked questions
PN is the European pressure rating that indicates the nominal pressure in bar. DIN and EN equipment is marked with PN; at ambient temperature this is close to the value in bar: PN 16 is 16 bar, or approximately 16.3 kg/cm².
Class 150 corresponds to PN 20. For a carbon steel body API 6D valve the working pressure is 19.6 bar between −29 °C and +38 °C and 17.7 bar at 100 °C.
Both are pressure ratings. PN is the European (DIN / EN) designation and Class the American (ANSI / ASME) designation; the correspondence between them is given in the conversion table.
Yes. The permissible working pressure decreases as temperature rises. For Class 300 it is 51.1 bar at −29 … +38 °C and 46.6 bar at 100 °C.
