Valves for Oil and Gas Production

In oil and gas production, valves are used on wellhead and gathering lines, on manifolds and on offshore platforms. This field requires a high pressure class, material suited to low temperature and NACE-compliant material for sour gas; on platforms, space and weight are also decisive. When you select valves for oil and gas production, the pressure class is determined first; wellhead and gathering lines and manifolds usually require Class 900 – 2500. The body and stem material, seat type and external protection are then selected according to the medium and the site.

On lines operating at low temperature, A350 LF2 low temperature steel is used for the body and 17-4 PH stainless steel for the stem. Devlon and PEEK seats are preferred in high pressure classes, while metal-to-metal seated valves are used on lines carrying abrasive media. For sour gas service, the body and internals are made of NACE-compliant material.

Our API 6D ball valves are manufactured to API 6D and ASME B16.34 in ANSI Class 150 – 2500 and tested to API 6D, API 598, API 6FA and ISO 10497. In large sizes and at high pressure, the trunnion mounted type is used. Double block and bleed (DBB) ball valves allow the cavity between two sealing points to be drained, and they are among the most widely used valves for oil and gas production.

On an offshore platform, deck space is the most expensive space. For this reason, the pig launcher and receiver ball valve and the high pressure mono block valve replace bulky assemblies and save space and weight. Valves in the marine environment are protected with a C5M paint system at least 350 microns thick.

The stem is designed with a wide bottom flange; even if the stem retainers and seals are removed, pressure cannot push the stem out. This allows the stem packing to be replaced while the valve is under pressure.
